of afghanistan. >> that's right. we begin there where afghan president hamid karzai's half brother was found shot to death at his home. ahmed wali karzai was the provenÇal council chief of kandahar. he suffered gunshot wounds to his head and chest according to hospital officials. a spokesman for kandahar's government said a guard killed karzai. the taliban says -- >> we've seen the worst so far. excessive heat warnings and advisories posted in 23 states. the heat in many areas could reach 115 degrees. the heat wave is being blamed for one death in madison county, illinois. in oklahoma it was so hot, that part of a highway buckled. look at that. motorist was hospitalized after his bike hit the buckled pavement. in arkansas several communities have opened cooling centers. good rule of thumb in this heat whatever you're doing don't overdo it. >> if you're going to go outside in heat like this better be drinking a lot of water before you come out. make sure you have some substance in your stomach or you might be going to the hospital. >> it was hard to stay focused because it was so hot out. >> dehy

the pentagon. it's an unscheduled stop for him. yesterday he visited troops and leaders in afghanistan. are you looking at video of his afghanistan visit. he said iraq must provide it's own security and leaders must crack down on armed factions targeting american troops. this as iraq's leaders debate over whether to ask american troops to stay in the country beyond this year. the white house chef of staff confirmed the united states is with holding aid to pakistan. they are with holding back about $850 million in aid and equipment for the army of pakistan. tensions have been on the rise since the raid and killing of bin laden in may. officials have been angry over the incursion into their territory without permission while the white house has been worried about pakistan's ineffectiveness in fighting the taliban and al-qaeda. >> the truth is our relationship with them is complicated. they have been victim of huge amounts of terrorism, but right now they have take especially steps that have given us reason to pause on some of the aid we were giving and we are trying to work through that. >> als

now. a soldier's death in afghanistan is shrouded in mystery. few details are known, except he was part of the army's secret force. cnn's pentagon correspondent, barbara starr, though with the details. >> reporter: it was here in the mountains of eastern afghanistan that army master sergeant benjamin stevenson was killed on his tenth combat tour of duty. this is the only photo the army will release of the soldier from ft. bragg's army special operations command. the military will say little about his extraordinary record. but cnn has been told by military sources stevenson was a veteran of the army's deeply classified world of special operations forces, highly trained in counterterrorist assault missions, the army equivalent of the navy s.e.a.l.s who killed osama bin laden. on july 21st, stevenson and others helicoptered at night into the mountains. the target, a camp of foreign fighters. the americans quickly came under fire and returned fire, killing nearly 50 insurgents. but at dawn, two more waves of insurgent s attacked. the u.s. repeatedly brought in reinforcements. preci

went to the canadian war museum and met some war veterans, past wars but also afghanistan and some military wives. she is one herself now so she had a lot to talk about with them. currently they're in the air heading toward montreal where they'll first visit a children's hospital. that will be quite an emotional visit. specifically catherine. she gets on very well with children. then they'll be coming to this culinary institute where they're going to speak to students and cook food with them. and william is a very good cook indeed. he cooks at home, we're told. and catherine, we're not so sure about so we'll get a sense of whether she can cook, too. >> okay. what about the crowds? how have they been? >> reporter: well, the crowds are gathering here. you may or may not know but quebec is not a monarchy stronghold. the polls are really interesting here. they've been backed up with conversations i've had with the people of quebec. they're saying they disapprove of the monarchy but actually they're huge fans of william and kate. so william and kate have done great thing for the monarch
